Pet Carrier Sizes Decoded: How to Pick One Your Airline Will Actually Accept
Why every airline publishes slightly different carrier dimensions and how to buy one carrier that works on most major US, European, and Asian carriers.
Every airline publishes a maximum carrier size that fits under the seat in front of you, and the dimensions are never the same from one airline to the next. The reason is simple: under-seat space is dictated by aircraft type and seat manufacturer rather than by an industry standard. A Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 has a different under-seat envelope than an American Airlines Airbus A321, which has a different envelope than a Lufthansa Airbus A350.
The most generous published cabin pet carrier dimension across the major US carriers is Spirit Airlines\' 18 by 14 by 9 inches (soft-sided). The most restrictive is Hawaiian Airlines\' inter-island limit of 16 by 10 by 9.5 inches (soft). If you only ever fly within the United States, a soft-sided carrier of approximately 17.5 by 11 by 9 inches will be accepted on every major US carrier including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Going slightly under the published limit is always safer than testing the limit because the gate agent has discretion at boarding.
For international itineraries, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, and most other European carriers cap the cabin carrier at 46 by 28 by 24 centimetres (18 by 11 by 9.5 inches), and the combined pet plus carrier weight at 8 kilograms. A carrier of 17.5 by 11 by 9 inches still fits comfortably in this envelope.
When you choose a carrier, prioritise three features. First, a soft-sided model with mesh on at least three panels gives your pet airflow and lowers stress. Second, a flat fleece insert (rather than a thick bed) gives more vertical room for your animal to stand. Third, a top opening makes loading at security much faster than a single front door.
For cargo travel, your carrier must meet IATA Live Animals Regulations. The interior must be tall enough that your pet can stand without their ears touching the top, long enough that they can lie down naturally, and wide enough that they can turn around. Hardware must be metal screws, not plastic clips, and the door must lock with a mechanism that cannot be accidentally opened in transit.
