Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport
Sydney, Australia · IATA SYD · ICAO YSSY
Pet relief area & accessibility
Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) is one of the strictest airports in the world for pet handling because Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry biosecurity rules require almost all inbound pets to be transferred to the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine facility outside Melbourne for a minimum 10-day quarantine. Inbound pets at SYD do not enter the passenger terminal — they are processed at the Sydney Airport Cargo Terminal and transferred by ground transport to Mickleham. Outdoor relief areas at the Arrivals curb are available for service dogs accompanying passengers with disabilities, but cabin pets are not permitted on Australian-domiciled carriers (Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar) on any commercial flight other than the approved assistance-dog programme.

Before you fly
Confirm your airline's pet program before you book — every carrier publishes a slightly different cabin carrier limit, in-cabin pet count, and breed-restriction list. Browse the airline pet policies for the carrier you plan to fly, and review the guides library for country-specific import rules and carrier preparation tips. The information on this page is editorial and should be confirmed with the airport's official passenger services desk before travel.
